St James Infirmary — Black Bottom Jazz Band 2007

St James Infirmary — Black Bottom Jazz Band 2007 During the recordings on September 28 2007 our friend Carel Wijnand showed up. In the preparations of this event we weren’t sure if reedplayer Arent Nieuwkamp would be able to come over from Canada. Health tests, driver’s licence problems and more made us decide to ask clarinetist Carel Wijnand to be on stand by. When Arent had immigrated to Canada in 1958 Carel had become one of our next reedplayers. Carel found out that he had some serious healthproblems as well and didn’t think he would be able to be there. In the meantime Arent had overcome his problems and had booked his trip. On a last moment’s notice Carel was able to come as well and in this clip we show you the very first time that Arent and Carel played together. They had never met before. Both Arent and Carel are excellent musicians. Carel’s music career had been interrupted for a period of more than 30 years when he was employed as a teaplanter in North Africa. Back in Holland in the late nineties Carel picked up his clarinet again and is now playing all over again Carel Wijnand clarinet, Arent Nieuwkamp soprano sax, Eduard Rahusen trombone, Bob Erwig cornet, Rob Herwig piano, Ari van Mensvoort banjo and Wim de Vries bass.
