The first wave of chinese immigrants to Canada and the US came during the 1850s, whom most were from the Taishanese speaking areas of Taishan, Kaiping, Xinhui, Enping, Heshan and Jiangmen in Guangdong Province. Many came to set up businesses or were in search for Gold during the Gold Rush in California (US) and then later in the Yukon (Canada). When the Gold Rush was over, many of them worked on building the railroad, both in the US and Canada. After that some returned back to China, while others stayed in North America to set up their businesses, primarily in their local Chinatowns. Between the period of 1850s until the early 1900s, there was a Head Tax that was placed on Chinese immigrants by the Federal Government of both countries, that forced them to pay a heavy tax before they can officially settle in Canada. The motive was to prevent the flow of Chinese immigration into their country. During WWII, many Taishanese Americans and Canadians served in the army to fight agaist the Japanese Army and the Nazi German Army. After that period, many talents came about such as Anna May Wong; who was the first chinese american actress, Feng Ru; who is known as the Father of Chinese Aviation, James Wong Howe; considered one fo the greatest American cinematographers, and many others.
