Brother and Sister Reunited After 52 Years – CTV at 6 and 11
My mother Anna Zsarnai, my father and I escaped from Hungary during the 1956 Revolution. My parents worked on a Communist work farm approximately 200 kilometers from Budapest, the capital of Hungary. When the Russian tanks rolled into the capital, thousands of people were killed. The exodus began and many fled the country before the borders were closed. Many were caught and many more imprisoned. Friends and family members were turning each other in and no one could be trusted. One cold November day in the middle of the night, 17 people took a chance and decided they would escape not just from the Communist work farm but from the country. When we left our one room home, my mother at the tender age of 20 with a 4 year old daughter, locked the front door, threw the house key over her shoulder and never looked back. My mother’s family had no idea that would be the last time they would see my mother and me. We were hidden in a covered, horse drawn bread wagon. Women and children in the wagon, the men driving the wagon and one man scouting the road ahead on a motor cycle looking out for Russian tanks. After two days of traveling the main roads, our motor cycle lookout came back with warnings of Russian tanks up ahead. The following 2 days we traveled on dirt farm roads with no idea which direction we were going in. The last town before the Austrian border, huge speakers blasted announcements “If anyone is caught housing or helping anyone escape the country they will be …

Hiawatha Rag – Barber Chris 1990
Hiawatha Rag – Barber Chris 1990. November 2010. Over 350 000 of you have already seen the youtube postings on my Barber site, but with great pleasure I enclose Chris Barber’s request. Have fun! Chris Barber. To:erwigfilms. Dear user, As the official representatives of Chris Barber and The Big Chris Barber Band, may we request that you include a link to the official Chris Barber Youtube channel in the description of your Chris Barber videos, and that you also include a link to Chris Barber’s official webite. Please find these links below. Sincerely, BigChrisBarberBand. www.youtube.com www.chrisbarber.net In a reunion concert series to celebrate the band’s 40th anniversary the Chris Barber Jazz Band plays Hiawatha Rag, a tune they had recorded in the mid fifties for the first time. Chris had found some of the former members of the band for this set of the concert. Trumpet/cornet player Pat Halcox is still in the band, former members are Monty Sunshine clarinet, Jim Bray bass and Colin Bowden drums. When I think of my early days of playing in the Netherlands I remember using this Barber arrangement for my own group. Then when I immigrated to Canada in 1966 and joined the Climax Jazz Band in 1971 I introduced almost this same arrangement there as well. I left Climax some 10 years ago, but I believe the band still plays it, and I’m sure in that same arrangement. It was one of our most requested tunes at the many festivals we played. Thank you Chris!
moving to canada: parent problems(from a teens point of view)?
right, well basically, we applied to move to canada well over 4 years ago, and today, my mum got an email saying that our passports and visas had arrived at the office of the company we are moving with, and that they will be sent to us tomorrow.
i was upstairs on my laptop at the time, and my mum came up and told me to guess what the email was about, and i did, but she said check your emails anyway, so i did and she hadn’t sent it, so i went onto hers and there it was, clear as crystal. i just read it and thought to myself, ‘ oh damn, we are really going, aren’t we’.
i don’t think my mum was very happy with my reaction, because i just kind of sat there and was like, yer, so what? so she asked me if i had read it and i said yer and she said ‘well what do you think’ and so i said ‘yer, great’.
anyway, later on at dinner, i asked her if that meant we were going to canada again for a fact finding trip, and my older brother turned round and said, ‘why would we be going?’. my mum hadn’t told him, and still hasn’t!! i was furious, so i went upstairs and was literally on the verge of telling him, because he has a right to know.
i was actually looking forward to it, but if this is what family life is going to be like, then i dont think i want to.
i think my mum has got it into her head that because she wants to go, then everyone else in the family surely must want to go, but i dont, and neither does my dad. another thing, my parents obviously havent realised that uprooting me from the middle of year 11, and GCSEs isnt such a good idea.
anyway, my problem is:
1. do you think someone should tell my brother that our visas are coming tomorrow? (the only reason my mum doesnt want him knowing is because she thinks he will go and leave the rest of us here)
2. should i wait until after my GCSEs before going, or go before, because they dont mean anything in canada?
3. how can i get it into my parents heads that i really DONT want to go? i have tried telling them and telling them that i am happy here, and dont want to go, as i have plans of what i am doing in this country.
any ideas?
i can remember the last thing someone said to me at an emigration seminar was: ‘the whole family should sit down and talk about it together. if not, its not going to work’. he got that SO right…
Suppose I can immigrate to Canada as permanent resident. Can I go to any province where I want to live & work?
Please explain…
