What would I need to do and spend to immigrate to canada? What kind of visa options for British are available?

We have friends over in Toronto who are willing to support us and help us find a shared new life there. Given this opportunity we want to move after saving a bit by latest end of January. Can anyone advise further? Cost of living, visa’s, prospects and cost.

one 4 months and the other 6 years. i don’t know where should i settle and where i register school for my son and also what treatment should i do at first ?
we have visa and job offer.
and 1 month time to fly .

Can a visitor to Canada apply for Canadian work permit/permanent residency?

I was wondering if someone who goes to Canada on a visitors visa, finds a job in Canada and the employer offers a job letter, will that be enough for the Canadian immigration authorities to allow the individual to apply for a Work permit or Permanent Residency? Will he/she need to leave Canada to before applying for the Work Visa/Permanent Residency?
